Alert guys! If you have only a few days left for your certificate to complete its time period, be ready to renew SSL certificate as soon as possible. As we all know that an SSL certificate is a trust seal and we would certainly like to freeze this trust among our users. But this requires renewal of our existing SSL certificates if they’re going to expire in few months from today.
How to Renew my SSL Certificate?
Let us inform you something about the re-issuance of an existing SSL certificate in some simple points:
- Each time you opt for a renewal, you’ll need to generate a new CSR/RSA pair & required to save your RSA for further installation process
- In case you are not able to generate CSR yourself, ask your web hosting provider to do this for you
- You can proceed with the next steps once done with the CSR generation
- Please use the same contact information that you used previously while getting an OV/EV SSL certificate as this will save you some time during renewal process
New CSR to renew SSL Certificate-Why?
There are many servers available which allow you to renew your SSL certificate without generating a new CSR. Apache server is one of them. However, following are the servers which require you to generate a CSR:
- Tomcat servers
- Java-based servers
- Windows servers
- Applications such as firewall, load balancers etc.
If you have any of the above server platforms, you must generate a new CSR before you submit your renewal.
Why install a new certificate, if it only requires renewal?
- The certificates expiration dates are hard-coded in the certificates themselves & hence makes it impossible to extend its life beyond a stipulated time period
- Technically, “Renewal” means purchasing an entirely new certificate just for the same domain/organization
- Please keep in mind that you have to provide a new documentation, in case there is any change in organization’s information to verify the changes
- Also, you should change the information in CSR as well
Things to keep in mind during Renewal
- Please keep in mind that during the renewal of the SSL certificate information needs re-validated.
- That means you’ll need to complete the DCV (Domain Control Validation) step through one of the methods such as email. HTTPS validation or DNS based validation selected during activation process
- If you have an OV (Organization validation) or EV (Extended Validation) certificate, the company information will be verified once again and resubmit the necessary documents to the CA (Certificate Authority)
- The certificate will be emailed to you after successful renewal. You should then install that on your server for the renewal to take effect
